How to Stop Negative Thoughts in Their Tracks

Emily Watson Books stop negative thoughts

To stop negative thoughts in their tracks, you must first be able to control your negative feelings about a situation or person. Negative feelings can be controlled in a variety of ways, and we'll show you a couple of tried-and-true techniques in this post.

Become more self-aware

First you must become aware of the exact instant your negative thoughts begin to stop them. To do so, observe your thoughts for unproductive, negative, or ultimately ego-centered scenarios and inner dialogues. Always pay attention to when and why your negative thoughts start. Self-awareness is key to stop any negative thoughts.

So, if you're having a conversation with someone and you realise you're not paying attention because of negative thoughts, draw your focus back to what they're saying right away. When you're eating, concentrate on the flavours. Alternatively, engage in some mental activity. Negative thoughts won't be able to monopolise your thoughts if you don't pay attention to them. It's similar to physical training in that the more you do it, the better the benefits.

Pay attention to your breathing

Consider the journey of your breathe as it enters your nostrils, expands your abdomen, rises, and then exits your nose. You can do this mental workout anywhere, at any time, and as often as you choose. Relaxation and meditation exercises are also worth a try as these will put you in a different more positive state of mind.

Detach yourself

Most people tend to dramatise or foresee the worst when having negative thoughts. Distance yourself from negative ideas. Examine the source of your distress and what you're experiencing. Change your negative thoughts to more logical ones. Recognise that things might not be as horrible as they appear. Visualise your negative thoughts as clouds in the sky spinning around but not touching you. Become detach from these clouds around you and toss them away.

Keep a journal of that negativity

No matter how terrible the circumstance is, you must immediately de-dramatise it so that negative thoughts are no longer possible. If you are always thinking negative thoughts, you are likely holding everything inside. Keep a journal of your feelings to help you let go and get some relief. Keeping a journal will also increase self-awareness about your tendency to feel negative.
